What is the purpose of the program?

The Peak Performance Program is designed to introduce youth participants to training in a way that sets the foundation for more advanced training. The program exposes participants to aspects of strength training, conditioning and high level performance and, through this exposure, develops key motor skills that are required in later stages of training at any level – school sport, community-level sport or high-performance sport.

This program will teach participants the foundation of Strength and Conditioning through utilising external load through weight such as dumbbells and barbells that will allow participants to develop their strength and power. Participants will be taken through an array of movements to develop strength such as:

    • Squats
    • Lunges
    • Step Up’s
    • Deadlifts
    • Romanian Deadlifts
    • Bench Presses

This will all be preceded by teaching participants the correct movements with no added external weight. All participants will be loaded with the appropriate weight taking into consideration their age and competency with the movement.

Benefits

We know that with peak periods of growth, come increases in limb length which can result in decrements in motor control performance and decreased coordination. With this, comes reduced neuromuscular control, which can result in increased risk of injury.

Recent trends suggest that junior athletes display substandard levels of movement competency and ability to complete basic movement skills. Earlier interventions such as exposure to strength and conditioning and movement training will result in better movement mechanics, enhanced sporting performance and reduced risk of injury.

Content

The Peak Performance Program has been designed utilising both research and experience with training youth in athletic settings. The PPP is based on a movement curriculum that adopts and exposes budding athletes to the athletic movement skills competency. These are the foundational movements that underpin all athletic movements. This is not only important in the development of athletic skill and competency but also underpins the development of healthy habits throughout life, regardless of athletic/sporting endeavours. PPP is a learning program that progresses to a strength and conditioning training program as students show that they can move competently. It is designed to teach participants critical skills in movement, to be confident and competent to move through phases of training.

Who can complete the program?

The program is open to both new and returning students.
The Peak Performance Program is open to year 7, 8 and 9 students exclusively to Catherine McAuley College students. The program is designed for both beginner students who have never completed the program and more experienced students with a higher degree of training or who have already completed the program. Our coaches have numerous years experience working with junior athletes and hence can monitor, adapt and modify the program to suit athletes of all experience.
